Chimney fire in a terrace house
A large number of the chimney fires that we encounter result from a build up of tar and creosote inside the liner. The thicker the build up of deposits the more serious and prolonged the resulting fire will be. The issue of tar buildup is often exacerbated by poor access to the flue system for cleaning the chimney. Most traditional solid fuel stove installations did not provide access for cleaning other than through the stove itself.
Remedial Action Undertaken
It was obvious from a CCTV survey that the liners were cracked and in need of replacement. We used a flexible liner to reline the chimney and opened a new soot door on the exterior gable wall. This new soot door will provide the owner with easy access in order to clean the chimney from outside as opposed to cleaning through the solid fuel stove installed inside the house.
